Festival of Lights Berlin – 2024

From October 4th to 13th, 2024, Berlin once again transformed into a radiant stage for the world as the city hosted the 20th edition of the Festival of Lights. Under this year’s inspiring theme, “Celebrating Freedom,” over 50 landmarks and iconic sites across the German capital became canvases for breathtaking light and video art.

In honor of the 35th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, this special anniversary edition paid tribute to the enduring spirit of unity, hope, and creative freedom. For ten unforgettable nights, the city was awash in color, emotion, and meaning—drawing in millions of visitors and reminding the world of Berlin’s unique power to inspire through light.

This wasn’t just illumination—it was storytelling on a grand scale. The capital’s most beloved buildings and public spaces were reimagined through powerful visuals, immersive installations, and spellbinding projections.

From Berlin, for Berlin—and beyond.

Here are just a few of the standout moments that left audiences awestruck:

Potsdamer Platz: Art Beneath Your Feet

One of the festival’s most striking installations wasn’t found in the sky—but underfoot. A multifaceted floor projection turned Potsdamer Platz into a radiant tapestry of lines, colors, and ornamental patterns. Like a living carpet, the display spilled across the ground and enveloped visitors in its glow—creating a dreamlike photo opportunity for anyone standing at the heart of the design.

Bebelplatz: A 180-Degree Masterpiece

The historic Bebelplatz was the stage for an unforgettable architectural staging—a sweeping 180-degree visual journey titled “Celebrating Freedom.” Renowned German artist Daniel Margraf brought the façade of the State Opera to life with vibrant, fluttering birds soaring across a dramatic black-and-white backdrop. The juxtaposition between movement and stillness, color and grayscale, modernity and heritage created a mesmerizing experience that lingered long after the lights dimmed.

Berlin Cathedral: Freedom in Full Spectrum

Once again, the Berlin Cathedral stood proudly as a symbol of strength and transformation. International artists including MP-STUDIO, Thierry Noir, Otto Schade, Archan Nair, and others transformed its historic façade into a dynamic platform for bold statements and artistic visions.

Each projection was a deeply personal interpretation of freedom—showcasing the Cathedral not only as a site of spiritual resonance but as a global voice for peace, identity, and resilience. Its architectural contours became an interplay of light, shadow, and storytelling, engaging viewers in a powerful dialogue between art and emotion.

The 2024 Festival of Lights Berlin was more than just a visual spectacle. It was a celebration of what makes Berlin—and humanity—shine. Diversity, resilience, connection, and joy were felt in every glowing corner of the city. It was a moment to pause, reflect, and be uplifted. And as the light shows flickered across buildings and hearts alike, the message was unmistakably clear:

Freedom is beautiful. Freedom is worth celebrating.

We at Pronorm are proud to have contributed once again to this extraordinary event—bringing our light to a festival that continues to illuminate the world.

Until next year—keep shining, Berlin.
